"NEW" LATINA/O MIGRATIONS: LATINA/O MOVING TO SUBURBS

BY STUDENT
Latinos/as living in the United States often confront racial slurs and stereotypes. It might be heard by Latinos living in the United States, “Go back to your country! You’re just here to steal our jobs!” This is just one among the many accusations made about Latinos and are directed especially and specifically to Latino/a immigrants. Even if a Latino is not an immigrant they are made to face stereotypes. In addition to being accused of “stealing” jobs from U.S. citizens, Latinos are also made to face insults and stereotypes such as not knowing English, being accused of defacing America with their “immigrant status”, and bringing crime with them wherever they go. On the contrary, these are statements are ignorant and wrong and can be disproven through use of new Latino/a immigration statistics. Some of these statistics and facts can be derived from the Prince William County incident .
Firstly, the accusation that Latino immigrants are taking jobs that more-deserving American citizens deserve is unjustified. The well-known argument against this is that Latino immigrants are taking the jobs that Americans don’t actually want to do. According to the Pew Research Center (PRC), “About half of Hispanic workers are employed in just four industries—construction; eating, drinking and lodging services; wholesale and retail trade; and professional and other business services” (Kochhar 2014). Most of these aren’t lucrative jobs. The fact that Latino immigrants are taking U.S. citizens’ jobs is quite untrue. In studies done by the PRC, Latinos have actually experienced an overall increase in wages. The reason for this is “Because Hispanic immigrants earn less than U.S.-born Hispanics, their retreat from the U.S. workforce raises the estimated earnings of Latinos overall” (Kochhar 2014). Basically, the jobs that Latino immigrants used to do are now actually being done by Latinos who are, in fact, U.S. citizens. With this being said, the argument that Latinos are defacing the U.S. with their immigrant status and populating the U.S. with tons of children can also be opposed. In 2011, the birthrate of the United States dropped to the lowest ever recorded “led by a plunge in births to immigrant women since the onset of the Great Recession” (Kochhar 2014). Also, there is no “defacing” being done with immigration status because there are more Latino citizens now than there are Latino immigrants. Often times, the argument is made that unauthorized immigrants, are the ones populating the U.S.’s immigrant population. However, according to the PRC, from 2009 to 2012, the unauthorized immigration population decreased in 14 states and only rose in seven (Cohn 2014).

The last two stereotypes to be battled in this blog post are the accusation that Latinos don’t know English and therefore don’t belong here and also that they bring crime to the streets. These two problems can be cited from the Prince William County incident. Accusations that Latinos do not know English may be true in some cases, but that’s the case for a majority of immigrants and America is a melting pot of immigrants. English is not even the national language of the United States. Thus, to argue the point that Latino immigrants are not even assimilating to the American culture because they don’t know English is a fruitless argument. Studies by the PCR have also shown there has been a gain in English proficiency by Latinos born in the U.S. by 17% from 1980 to 2013 (Krogstad 2015). Finally, when Prince William County was questioned by the government about the rise of crime in their streets, it was shown that the county could not provide any factual evidence supporting their statement. Thus, crime is not something that should be blindly associated with the Latino population and therefore should not be an argument made against Latinos staying in the United States as are the other arguments and stereoypes.

  1. I agree that all these stereotypes are untrue, unsupported, and just ignorant all around. I believe that Latinos contribute greatly to the economy of America and their presence is only advancing America and adding new diversity to the country. There are many Latino's in America that are doing great things and not bringing crime here. To go along with your argument that Latinos are not taking jobs from Americans, a study found that U.S. born citizens had the same chances of finding a job at the economic peak of 2005/2007 as they did when immigration was at a much lower level.

  2. I agree so much with you blog post. Unfortunately no matter who we are or where we go, we will always be tied down with the stereotype labels people place on us. Its stereotypes that slows down the process of growth in this country. The fact that Latinos are often seen as lazy and untrustworthy is crazy because they mainly makeup the middle working class group. Whether is a low waged job or something as successful as a CEO, Latinos can be found all over American holding positions from all type of spectrum.

  3. I agree with this post so much and it is honestly saddening to know that we are still in the year 2015, going into 2016 and these stereotypes still exist. Just because someone doesn't speak English, what gives someone else the right to judge you? Just because a n individual does not speak English, that does mean that they don't belong in this country. If someone is working hard, why must does someone have the audacity to tell them to go back to their country! They are just working hard and it is truly unfair to those that come to this country for better opportunities yet get discriminated against.

  4. This post is very informative and agreeable in many ways. Its crazy to see how much stereotyping goes on in our world and the issues which it leads to has manifested itself in many ways. One of your points of how Hispanics are stealing jobs from whites is an issue that has been going on for a very long time. It is clear to see how whites react to this kind of accusation given through the Prince William County incident. Its unfortunate that so many of these stereotypes are negative and just created to try and evict the incoming immigrants. During today's world, some of that has thankfully changed and seems to be a little less of an issue but by no means is it going anywhere. It just isnt fair to see this kind of punishment being put on people who are just trying to live better lives.

  5. First, I liked that you started off by relating to the Prince William County incident! The film brought a lot of light to the issues you mention (i.e., Latinos do not know English and the rise of crime). Additionally, good point in stating that some of the work, supposedly being stolen from more-deserving American citizen, is being done by U.S. citizens that are Latino. Latinos are not necessarily proud of the work they need to do in order to provide for their family, but they are at least doing something to get their family or themselves moving forward. I'm not sure I would call it stealing jobs if the job was available and no one wanted it because they believe they're too good for it meanwhile, they may have the same level of education as someone from a developing country that was unable to finish their education.

  6. This post did a good job of proving point again stereotypes and accusation minorities/immigrants have been facing. I always thought it was funny when i hear people accuse immigrants for stealing their jobs. What jobs exactly are they talking about? The jobs that they didn't want to do ? Jobs that pays little to nothing wages?. It is not stealing when they didn't want to do the job in the first place. The accusation is completely pointless in my opinion.

  7. Thank you so much for this! I have always wondered how the government counted for undocumented immigrants. it is also interesting to see that you mentioned how inaccurate the census really in is. Even in cases when we choose our races. There are many Latino/a who self identify as white when they have Latino/a heritage.

  8. Thank you! I am glad you took the time to point out and explain the stereotypes that Hispanics continually are labeled with. It is cruel and unjustified. And yes! The Prince William County incident was a very discouraging event that took place and discriminated against Latinos. I hate how so many people think that Latinos that are here in the U.S. is a luxury that they shouldn't have, and how dare they take away our jobs. Thanks for showing the truth on how we really do not take others jobs. It's just that they are willing t "do the jobs no one else wants to do", and they work hard on it. And just because certain latinos don't speak amazing English is not justification for the police or ANYBODY to come up to them and harass them with any form of discrimination. I do agree with how you said that, no Latinos cannot just be branded as those who are responsible for the crimes in their community as a whole population.

  9. This was a very well written and very informative post! It is unfortunate that people are still capable of classing an entire group of people and making (mostly) false assumptions on regular innocent people. It is sad to see this actually happen in the real world, just like Trump referring to all Latinos as Mexicans and falsely stating that all "Mexicans" were rapists, murderers and drug dealers. It is also eye opening to read this post after watching 9500 Liberty and seeing that in the documentary, people really were being treated like this.
