LATINA/OS TAKE CENTER STAGE: CENSUS 2000

BY PEDRO GONZALEZ
People often forget that Mexicans have been here in the United States for generations. Mexicans did not come out of nowhere; they were already settled here. Let’s also not forget that those walls that we call borders were never there, Mexicans didn’t have to worry about being caught and being sent back to their homeland.
The United States isn’t just the home for Mexicans, but also Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Salvadorians, Hondurans and other cultures of Latin America and all have come to this country for a common goal: to either support families who they left behind or start a new life here in the states. In an article, Betsy Guzman, writes how the Hispanic population has grown 50 percent since 1999, with most of the population of Hispanics being Mexican. “The Hispanic population increased by 57.9 percent, from 22.4 million in 1990 to 35.3 million in 2000, compared with an increase of 13.2 percent for the total U.S. population (Guzman).”  With an increasing population of a Latino culture in this country that means it gives us more of a voice, and gives us more power moving on towards the future to implement changes we would like to see in the country. In an article written by Melissa Therrien and Roberto R. Ramirez from the 2000 census, they show that most of the Hispanics that are in the country are between 18 to 64 years of age. They come young because they come here to work.
People sometimes wonder, how are Mexicans able to stay in this country so long? Why is their population growing? The Reason that Mexicans have been able to stay here so long is because they come to this country willing to work jobs that some would never even think about doing. They come as immigrants just looking to work in the first job they can, which is why the population will continue to grow. More Mexicans are going to come in needing jobs and job owners will give it to them for the simple fact that it would be beneficial because the Mexicans would do it for cheap. Mexicans are needed in this country as much as some may say they don’t belong here because they are illegal. They are a valuable asset to this country and have a right to be here as much as anyone else. So I argue that without them here our country wouldn’t run the way it does. Who would work the jobs they do? That goes for all Latinos/a who are here or plan on coming here. They are needed just like everyone else who is here.

Yes, Mexicans play such an integral part in the United States. it's sad that many people don't know the history of Mexico-U.S. relations and scapegoat Mexicans or taking jobs most others refuse or simply aren't willing to do. there's actually a movie called "A Day Without Mexicans" which talks about what would happen if all the Mexicans who worked here simply disappeared.

  2. In a neither good nor bad way, the post is very obvious. It is known by those who care about the subject, that a lot of Mexicans are traveling here and/or have been here for a long time. This is implied in the quote, "We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us." ( I am not sure who said it. We discussed it in class.) Either way, it is known that the illegal immigrants would do any form of work in order to gain money, because they have traveled a great distance, and any work is better than none. So, you're blog is correct and makes sense, I just find it relatively obvious.

  3. I understand were you are coming from because often people do say that Mexicans are not needed, but the truth is we do need. I do not think anyone wants to have the jobs they have and with such low pay. I do not think people want to start paying others minimum wage when they can pay mexicans less for the same job. Mexicans line up everyday trying to get a job, sadly we have other latino groups who are offered more opportunities but do not take advantage of them. I do agree with your blog, and as Anna said it does make sense.

  4. I agree with this blog Mexicans have come a long way to not be given the respect they deserve. Many Mexicans do, do the jobs others don't want to do and they also do it for cheaper.Mexicans work very hard for there money and its unfortunate that they don't get paid what someone else would get paid because they are Mexican.

  5. I agree with the point you are trying to make with this blog. But then again, it is the constant Latino struggle that we deal with everyday. People always tent to forget that Mexicans were here first, or that Puerto Ricans were almost forced to migrate into the United states. .

  6. I agree with this post. Of course the Mexicans are need but some people look past this. I feel like the United States would not be the same period without Latinos. I feel like at this point we already are to highly involved in the country. That if all Latinos left the United States would not be the same.

I believe that Mexicans do take on many of the low end jobs in society in order to make a living. They come into this country seeking financial stability and to escape the hardships they face in Mexico. This is something that we as Americans don't realize because we just think of Mexicans as illegals or as people taking our jobs. I do believe that Mexicans just like Puerto Ricans strive for their progression in the United States and that is what essentially keeps them around and keeps them working.
